Our team were randomly given the singer Steven Morrissey and had to create branding for him in the form of either a label, store or a charity. Therefore we created a mood board that represented him, this included his opinions, interests and things he likes, as well as images we thought summed his style sense up. We acknowledged that he is a vegan and likes the idea of being pure, He admired Oscar Wilde (poet), he’s patriotic, he was associated with the Salford Lads Club, he has released a lot of songs about school, and is an attention seeker.

We decided to focus on the time period when he was in the Smiths, before he got controversial, therefore looking at the aesthetics based on this, as we almost wanted the brand to reminisce on what he used to be like. Therefore due to realizing his obsession with baggy shirts and the whole concept of flowers that they used in concerts/ gigs, we came up with the brand “wilted” with incorporating a flower with dropping petals in the logo. In conclusion we made a shirt label, and as a form of promotion we decided to make a promotional video in the style of the Smiths old music videos, so we created mood boards to express the aesthetics we wanted to portray and also created a story board planning out all the shots we are going to complete.

Reflection

The aspects I feel we did well as a team was the research beforehand as the first step we took in approaching this was researching information about him personally to understand him as a person so we could pick up key traits, as myself and a few other members of my team had never heard of him before.

Additionally another positive from this workshop I feel was the idea itself, as we really tried to think outside the box, and get over the obstacle that some people don't actually like him anymore.

However the aspects I would improve are the planning of the location, as season wasn't taken into account, as the Botanical gardens didn't look as green due to being in winter, however we did find another suitable location, Platt field park.

Also within the group brain storm we mentioned doing a concept store however we didn't develop this idea, therefore to improve I would create idea's for the concept store to give the idea more depth.

By completing this task I learnt how by picking out key information about a key influencer such as Steven Morrissey you can collect and summarise information about them and turn this into a feature of their brand.

Development

To develop our work from class we decided to establish our brand more and actually make a promotional video for it. Therefore we contacted models who we knew of and chose the location Platt Field Park, as we wanted an outside location. We also used a prop of a bike as we took inspiration from The Smiths video "Stop me if you think you've heard this before". We the chose music from The Smiths as well.

Development

In order to develop this idea I decided to style and photograph some editorial shots to elaborate and expand on the promotional video, therefore keeping the same aesthetics and still including the thought of flowers.
